Jug Fishing Regulations

While we try to stay on top of jug regulations by state each year, you need to double check that no changes have occurred. Please be aware that in some states regulations also change by body of water fished and will need to be researched separately.

ILLEGAL in the following states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington.

Alabama

Fishing with jugs is permissible in most Alabama public water bodies with a sport fishing license, if required. Jugs are not required to be labeled with angler identification and there is no limitation on the number of jugs used. All jugs must be removed from the water at the end of the fishing trip. Fishing with jugs is illegal in State-owned PFLs (see Public Fishing Lakes).

A floating fishing device not attached to a stationary object or boat.

Up to 25 jugs or similar devices may be used per person and must be clearly marked with either the user’s name and address, driver’s license number or current vehicle tag number.

These may be left unattended only from sunset to sunrise.
